Community Liaison, Expert Steering Team

Type of position:

Part time, Permanent

Hours of work:

Minimum 10 hours/month, with optional opportunities for additional hours

Compensation:

$25.60/hour

Location & Office Environment 

This is mainly a virtual position. The team will use email, phone, and video calls to work together. If you do not have the Internet or a device to access the Internet, we may be able to help. From time to time there will be in person meetings and events.

About the Alliance to End Homelessness Ottawa (ATEHO)

The Alliance to End Homelessness Ottawa is a member-driven coalition of people and organizations working together to end homelessness through systems planning and coordination, public education and advocacy, and mobilization.

About the Expert Steering Team (EST)

The Expert Steering Team is a group of people who have experienced (or are experiencing) homelessness. They are not asked to share their story or personal experience of homelessness. Instead, they use their strengths, skills and experience to make meaningful change to the housing and homelessness system in Ottawa.  

Job Summary

The Community Liaison, reporting to the Engagement Manager of the ATEHO, is responsible for working with ATEHO staff, agencies, committees and working groups to improve the homelessness and housing system in Ottawa through policy advice, advocacy and public education.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Participate in weekly virtual meetings (Tuesdays, 3pm-5pm)
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and Engagement Manager in setting strategic goals for the team and for the organization, towards the mission of improving the housing and homelessness system.
  • Guide internal processes and policy development to ensure that the challenges and insights of people experiencing homelessness are considered at every level of decision-making and program design.
  • Consult with member agencies and other organizations who are seeking meaningful lived experience engagement. Work with partners to ensure their policies and programs are benefiting people experiencing homelessness.
  • Develop tools and consult on the development of other lived experience teams.
  • Facilitate focus groups to support agencies in improving client engagement. 
  • Partner with researchers to develop ethical methods and design that are safe and that will benefit the people impacted by the research.
  • Represent the Alliance and the EST on committees and working groups throughout the sector.
  • Write articles and public engagement pieces that support an anti-stigma approach to ending homelessness in Ottawa.
Relevant Experience and Skills:
  • To end homelessness, people with personal experience of homelessness must be engaged meaningfully. Therefore, a successful candidate for this position will have experienced homelessness, or will be currently experiencing homelessness. 
  • A successful candidate will live in the Ottawa area, as this position requires an understanding of the homelessness system in Ottawa.
  • Basic computer skills (email, video calls)
  • Knowledge of the housing and homelessness system

  • English fluency (our meetings will be in English), French language is an asset

Note about Criminal Record Check

Everyone who works at the ATEHO must complete a criminal record check.  A criminal record check is meant to protect people from harm. We know there are many reasons people, in particular people with lived/living experience of homelessness, have criminal records. Therefore, the ATEHO will work with individual applicants to decide whether they are a good fit, whether they have a criminal record or not. ATEHO will pay for the criminal record check.
